Germany's MRK is in talks with Iran to sign a 2.5-billion-euro deal to construct a subway system in the southwestern city of Ahvaz. MRK's executive director, Peter Hartman, is in Tehran to discuss the deal with Iranian officials.

The German investment group reached an agreement with Iran last November to construct a railroad, linking Bojnourd in northeastern Iran to the city of Gorgan, in the northern province of Golestan.

Hartman said Iran was a suitable place for investment, adding that German companies should not get involved in political issues.

He made the remarks in a meeting in Tehran with the Secretariat of Iran's High Council of Free Trade-Industrial Zones, Mahmoud Salehi.

Salehi, for his part, stressed that Iran's main economic policy is centered on attracting foreign investment and said that Iran's free trade zones would create great opportunities for economic cooperation.
